Ten and a half months out from the Champions League 2026-27 final, the competition begins with qualifying. These levels of qualifying allow teams from all confederations in Europe a chance for qualification to the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League. While none of the teams from San Marino or Gibraltar typically run the gauntlet to qualify all the way from round 1, interesting stories come out of qualifying every year. Just last year, Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt qualified for knockouts after coming through qualifying, and ended up knocking out Inter Milan and making top 16. Azerbaijani side Qarabağ made knockouts as well, coming all the way from the 2nd qualifying round. The Kazakhstani club Kairat, made their Champions League debut all the way from the first qualifying round. That’s 3 examples from last year, just in Champions League alone.
I did not release my predictions for Round 1, but I did rank all the teams before Round 1 started, so for each matchup I’ll give who I would’ve picked and review the matchup. Then I’ll give my predictions for every Round 2 match.
Champions League
Round 1 Results
Match 1: Sabah (Azerbaijan) def. The New Saints (Wales) 4-1 (2-0/2-1)
After Qarabağ’s run last year, I’m high on the Azerbaijani champions. Sabah scored both goals late in game 1 before getting a red card in stoppage time. In the away fixture they scored twice in the first half to go up 4-0 on aggregate. The allowed a late goal to ruin the clean sheet but punched their ticket to round 2 regardless.

Match 2: Shamrock Rovers (Ireland) def. Floriana (Malta) 5-3 (0-2/5-1)
Floriana scored in first half stoppage time and took advantage of a Rovers red card to go up 2-0 in the home fixture. Shamrock Rovers scored just 7 minutes into the Irish game, but allowed Floriana to score quickly after. Goals at the 29th and 48th minute leveled the aggregate, and 61′ and 73′ goals pushed the Rovers over the top, stunning Floriana after they won the first fixture.

Match 3: Iberia 1999 (Georgia) def. Flora (Estonia) 5-4 (3-2/2-2)
Iberia 1999 went up 2-0 quickly, but allowed Flora to pull within 1 before halftime. They failed to take advantage of a Flora Red Card, with both teams scoring once more and giving the Georgian side just 1 goal lead heading to Tbilisi. Two early goals from Nika Sikharulashvili put Iberia 1999 up 3 in the aggregate, but Flora stormed back, scoring at 69′ and 84′. Flora was unable to find the equalizing goal though, and fell just short.

Match 4: Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar) def. Inter Club d’Escaldes (Andorra) 4-2 (3-1/1-1)
Lincoln Red Imps are always a tough out in this competition, at least as far as teams from Gibraltar go, but this was a pretty favorable draw for the Imps. The scored all 4 goals in Gibraltar, but unfortunately one was into their own net, giving them a 3-1 lead headed on the road. After a scoreless first half, Lincoln Red Imps scored to go up 4-1 on aggregate, they conceded late to draw the leg, but they won the match to advance.

Match 5: Larne (Northern Ireland) def. Tre Fiori (San Marino) 3-1 (1-0/2-1)
San Marino has the lowest Association Ranking Coefficient by UEFA by a surprisingly large margin so Tre Flori was coming to any matchup as a sizeable underdog. In San Marino, they conceded just once, right before halftime, but couldn’t get anything going offensively. 11 minutes into the away leg, they equalized. That was the end of the good fortune for Tre Flori though, they conceded a few minutes later to trail again and after 2 red cards and 1 more goal they were sent packing.

Match 6: Ararat-Armenia (Armenia) def. Riga (Latvia) 4-3 (2-0/2-3)
A scoreless first half did not hold into the second of leg 1. Ararat scored, Riga was red carded, and Ararat scored a second goal at home. In Riga, the home team scored twice to equalize the aggregate. Ararat would then answer with 2 of their own, a last second penalty kick goal for Riga was enough to win them the leg, but not the match as Ararat-Armenia moves on.

Match 7: KuPS (Finland) def. Vardar (North Macedonia) 4-3 (2-0/2-3) (a.e.t.)
This was first and only Champions League match this round to require extra time. KuPS won the first leg 2-0, but failed to score after a Vardar Red Card in the 74th minute. In Finland, Vardar scored the only goal within 90 minutes but still trailed by one in the aggregate. A stoppage time penalty stunned KuPS and sent the game into extra time. KuPS scored at 100′, Vardar at 102′ and KuPS again at 105’+1 in an epic 6 minute stretch that ended up being the difference.

Match 8: Kauno Žalgiris (Lithuania) def. Drita (Kosovo) 4-3 (1-1/3-2)
Kauno Žalgiris started the scoring off in the first leg, but Drita equalized, sending the match to Kosovo tied. Kauno Žalgiris started the scoring off again, but this time conceded two and trailed late in the game. Vykintas Slivka scored his second goal of the game to make things level and Amine Benchaib’s stoppage time penalty hit the back of the net to push Kauno Žalgiris over the top.

Match 9: Universitatea Craiova (Romania) def. ML Vitebsk (Belarus) 5-1 (4-1/1-0)
CSU Craiova started off the scoring in the 4th minute against ML Vitebsk. The Belarussian side equalized, but after 2 penalties and a stoppage time goal, Universitatea Craiova led 4-1 and the match was headed to Craiova, Romania. In the Romanian leg, the game remained scoreless until Universitatea Craiova scored another stoppage time goal for good measure.

Match 10: Egnatia (Albania) def. Petrocub Hîncești (Moldova) 7-2 (1-1/6-1)
Petrocub scored the rare 1′ goal, but Egnatia evened things up at the 35th minute. Egnatia got a red card during first half stoppage time, but was able to park the bus in the second half and carry a 1-1 draw into their home fixture. This game, it only took Egnatia 2 minutes to take the lead. By halftime, they led by 3, thanks to a Petrocub own goal. When it was all over, the 7-2 victory marks the biggest offensive outburst of the round, and the biggest blowout as the only team to win by at least 5 goals. Egnatia look like a force to be reckoned with heading into round 2.

Match 11: Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) def. Borac Banja Luka (Bosnia & Herzegovina) 5-1 (1-1/4-0)
Borac Banja Luka got the scoring started with a 9′ penalty in game one, but a 55th minute goal by Levski Sofia tied things up. In the Bulgarian leg, it was all Levski. The first half was scoreless but Levski Sofia netted 4 second half goals to win the leg and the match. The Bosnian side got nothing going in open play and fell apart defensively at the end to send Levski Sofia into the next round.

Match 12: Víkingur Reykjavík (Iceland) def. ETO Győr (Hungary) 3-2 (1-0/2-2)
This was a tough match when drawn, both teams were among my highest rated in the round, but the Hungarian side ended up my #2 ranked team behind only Sabah. In Iceland, no goals were scored until a stoppage time game winner by Víkingur. When the match moved to Hungary though, Víkingur Reykjavík scored again to take a 2-0 aggregate lead. The Hungarian side battled back with a penalty and an Icelandic own goal to even things up heading into halftime. Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the lone second half goal though to pull out the victory and eliminate ETO Győr.

Match 13: Kairat (Kazakhstan) def. Sutjeska (Montenegro) 4-1 (2-1/2-0)
Kairat makes their return to Champions League qualifying at the bottom of the gauntlet once again, but they had next to no problem dispatching the Montenegrin side. After a scoreless first half, they netted their first goal at the 76th minute, but Sutjeska had a 90′ equalizer in them. Kairat still won the leg, scoring 2 minutes into stoppage time to win 2-1. In Montenegro, they had another scoreless first, but Kairat opened up the scoring in the 68th minute. Now down 3-1, Sutjeska got a red card, and Kairat capitalized with a penalty a few minutes later.

Match 14: KÍ (Faroe Islands) def. Atert Bissen (Luxembourg) 4-2 (2-1/2-1)
In their home leg, KÍ opened both halves with the first goal, but Atert Bissen was able to claw one back in the 51st minute to keep things close. KÍ needed at least a draw in Luxembourg, but after netting their first goal in just 8 minutes they were looking for more. Atert Bissen equalized the game but never could tie up the aggregate. KÍ’s 59′ goal was the dagger that sent the Luxembourgish side home and sent KÍ through to the next round.

Round 2 Picks & Predictions
My picks went 10-4 in Round 1 of Champions League qualifying, but Round 2 is a lot harder to predict, especially teams that already played and won against a higher ranked team who skipped Round 1.
Champions Path
Match 1: Mjällby AIF (Sweden) def. Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar)
I love Lincoln Red Imps, but Mjällby AIF is tough draw for the Imps, gotta go with the Swedish side.
Match 2: Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) def. Larne (Northern Ireland)
Red Star Belgrade is another team that got to skip Round 1, while Larne drew the worst team in the competition and only won 3-1.
Match 3: Sabah (Azerbaijan def. KuPS (Finland)
I’ve already stated how high I rate Sabah, and luckily for them they drew a fellow Round 1 winner, who took extra time to make it here.
Match 4: KÍ (Faroe Islands) def. Kauno Žalgiris (Lithuania)
I had KÍ ranked ahead of Kauno Žalgiris coming into the tournament. Kauno Žalgiris’ win over Drita made me consider picking them but I ultimately stuck with KÍ.
Match 5: AGF (Denmark) def. Lech Poznań (Poland)
I think Lech Poznań is very good, but AGF is my #1 ranked team entering round 2. It’s a tough draw from both sides, but I’m sticking with AGF to advance
Match 6: Shamrock Rovers (Ireland) def. Ararat-Armenia (Armenia)
This was a hard one for me to pick, with two pretty evenly matched sides. I was ultimately more impressed by Shamrock Rovers comeback in round 1, and went with them.
Match 7: Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) def. Universitatea Craiova (Romania)
Two of the highest rated clubs from Round 1 who both won 5-1 now match up in Round 2. I had Levski Sofia 1 spot higher coming into the tournament, and was more impressed with their win over Borac Banja Luka so they got the nod for me in this one.
Match 8: Omonia (Cyprus) def. Kairat (Kazakhstan)
My heart wanted me to pick Kairat to go on a run again, but Cyprus really surprised me last year and I rate Omonia pretty highly, so I had to go with them in this one.
Match 9: Thun (Switzerland) def. Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia)
No new info to go off of here between 2 teams that skipped Round 1. I like swiss football, and I think Thun has the edge in the matchup, but if I had to predict 1 match to go to extra time, this would be the one.
Match 10: Víkingur Reykjavík (Iceland) def. Hapoel Be’er Sheva (Israel)
Only 1 other team raised their stock more in Round 1 than Víkingur Reykjavík after they defeated ETO Győr. Hapoel Be’er Sheva are a good team but I think they’re on the weaker side of new Round 2 teams. Hapoel Be’er Sheva should probably still be the favorites, but I’m taking Víkingur Reykjavík.
Match 11: Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) def. Iberia 1999 (Georgia)
Iberia 1999 was my lowest ranked team to advance from Round 1. They won a close match over a Flora team I didn’t rate incredibly high either. Ultimately I think they’re just outmatched by Slovan Bratislava in this one.
Match 14: Egnatia (Albania) def. Celje (Slovenia)
When I said only 1 team raised their stock more than Víkingur Reykjavík in Round 1, that one team was Egnatia. They scored the most goals of the round and won by the biggest margin of the round against a Petrocub Hîncești team that I picked to beat them. How foolish of me. Celje is a Round 2 team, but they were my lowest ranked Round 2 side and I’m taking the Albanians to pull off the upset.
League Path
There was no Round 1 in the league path, so there’s no new information to go on for these 4 teams.
Match 1: Fenerbahçe (Turkiye) def. Górnik Zabrze (Poland)
Tough luck for the 2 Polish teams. By my rankings, both teams got the hardest possible draws. I picked both to lose, but I’m more confident in this pick of the 2. Fenerbahçe is a team I’m really high on and will likely be picking to earn their way into the main stage.
Match 2: Heart of Midlothian (Scotland) def Sturm Graz (Austria)
I have no confidence in this pick, but I ranked Heart of Midlothian slightly higher than Sturm Graz, so that’s what I’m going with. This could be a close one.
Europa League
Round 1 Results
Match 1: Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) def. Universitatea Cluj (Romania) 0-0 (0-0/0-0) (a.e.t.)
Well, in match 1 there isn’t much excitement to talk about. One of my top ranked teams in the round Dynamo Kyiv was completely unable to get anything going as both games ended without a goal or red card, even after extra time in game 2. Dynamo Kyiv did get the job done on penalties though, winning 4-2.

Match 2: Qarabağ (Azerbaijan) def. Vestri (Iceland) 6-0 (3-0/3-0)
While Dynamo Kyiv’s win may have been a let down, my #1 ranked team in the field took care of business against Vestri 6-0. In both games they scored 2 first half goals before netting 1 more and never conceding. They head into next round on the biggest high you can have, even if they had a favorable draw in Round 1.

Match 3: Hajduk Split (Croatia) def. Žilina (Slovakia) 3-2 (2-0/1-2)
Hajduk Split got off to a two goal lead in the home leg, scoring once in each half. They scored a first half stoppage time goal to go up 3-0 in the aggregate. Žilina scored one of their own, and were helped by a late own goal to bring them within 1, but Hajduk Split held on to take the victory.

Match 4: CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria) def. Derry City (Ireland) 5-3 (3-2/2-1)
CSKA Sofia took the home leg after a back and forth match. CSKA Sofia scored just 9 minutes in, but Derry City evened it up. CSKA Sofia scored 2 more, one on each side of halftime to go up 3-1. Derry City added one more late, but headed back to Ireland down a goal. Shortly after halftime in game 2, Derry City evened the aggregate with a goal, but CSKA Sofia took the lead back in the 74th minute and held onto it. A 90’+18 own goal increased their lead and ended the match in favor of the Bulgarians.

Match 5: Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova) def. Aluminij (Slovenia) 1-0 (0-0/1-0)
Sheriff Tiraspol was unable to take the lead in their home leg, with the game ending in a 0-0 draw. Forced to outplay Aluminij in Slovenia, Sheriff Tiraspol did just that. They scored a goal 5 minutes into the fixture and held on to win the match 1-0. I didn’t rate either team very highly coming in, but I had Aluminij winning, so good upset for Sheriff Tiraspol.

Match 6: Ferencváros (Hungary) def. Vojvodina (Serbia) 5-1 (2-1/3-0)
A tough draw for Serbian side Vojvodina, as they were the highest ranked team in my rankings that drew an even higher ranked team. With that being said, they didn’t play up to that ranking, Ferencváros thoroughly outplayed them across 180 minutes. Ferencváros scored early but an own goal evened up the game. An 86′ goal gave the Hungarian side the lead they’d hold for the rest of the match. 9 minutes into game 2 in Hungary, Vojvodina went down to 10 men, and Ferencváros netted 3 to cruise into the next round.

Round 2 Picks & Predictions
I went 5-1 in the Europa League first round, but as early as Round 2 we get some really heavy hitters entering the competition. I like a lot of our Round 1 winners, but how many will be able to keep up.
Match 1: Anderlecht (Belgium) def. Hammarby IF (Sweden)
I might have picked Sweden’s Hammarby IF against some round 1 winners, but Anderlecht should be one of the best teams in round 2, I think they take care of business.
Match 2: Qarabağ (Azerbaijan) def. CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria)
A good draw for both sides, avoiding any of the top tier Round 2 teams. I’ve spoken at length about my views of these Azerbaijani teams, so it should be no surprise I’m taking Qarabağ.
Match 3: Tromsø (Norway) def. Hradec Králové (Czechia)
Bodø/Glimt raised Norway’s stock a lot last year, and Norway’s world cup run helps with that too, even if very few of those players actually play in the Norway’s Eliteserien. On the other side is Hradec Králové, a team who was a late addition to the tournament due to a team above them being suspended for match fixing. For those reasons, I’m taking Tromsø, even though Czechia usually puts competitive teams into these European tournaments.
Match 4: Ferencváros (Hungary) def. Twente (Netherlands)
This is my big upset pick, I think the most dominant team from round 1, Ferencváros is able to get it done, even against a Dutch team. The Netherlands often has teams breeze through qualifying, but I’m taking Ferencváros to pull off the upset.
Match 5: Midtjylland (Denmark) def. Beşiktaş (Turkiye)
I went back and forth on this one but ultimately decided to go with Midtjylland who I expect to be the favorites as well.
Match 6: Pafos (Cyprus) def. Hajduk Split (Croatia)
Hajduk Split didn’t wow me in their Round 1 game, and that’s probably what it would take for me to pick them over Cyprus’ Pafos, who I think pretty highly of.
Match 7: Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) def. Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova)
Sheriff Tiraspol was the only Round 1 team that won against my predictions, and I still think they are the weakest team in this round. I’m not 100% sold on Maccabi Tel Aviv as a contender, but they should be able to get this one done.
Match 8: Benfica (Portugal) def. St. Gallen (Switzerland)
I love St. Gallen and Swiss football, but Benfica has to be the favorite to qualify out of this group and has a big edge over St. Gallen.
Match 9: PAOK (Greece) def. Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine)
Dynamo Kyiv is a team I would’ve considered picking for a Round 2 upset, but after a bad Round 1 performance and an even worse Round 2 draw, I’m going with PAOK.
