Dana White’s Contender Series Season 9 Week 8 Rundown

Another great set of fights this week with plenty of talented fighters for Dana to choose from.

Fight 1 (Flyweight): Vagabov (-770) vs Henrique (+540)

The fighters stayed on their feet early with Henrique winning most of the exchanges. Vagabov eventually got to the cage but struggled to get the takedown. He eventually flipped him with a hip drop and after a scramble had a guillotine attempt. Henrique survived the attempt but ended on his back. I guess Vagabov wins the round 10-9.

Henrique initiated a clinch early in round 2. Vagabov’s striking has been decent with some creative strikes and a bunch of uppercuts. Not much happened this round. Vagabov wins 10-9 but trending towards no contract.

Vagabov got Henrique to the ground in round 3. Vagabov had his back and got the body triangle. He held it all round but never made any progress. With 30 seconds left Henrique slammed him. Vagabov wins 10-9 and wins the fight 30-27 but I’m leaning towards no contract.

Fight 2 (Featherweight): Campbell (-550) vs Seck (+410)

Both guys wrestled early but Campbell ended up with position. Campbell hit Seck with a knee against the cage and it looked like Seck was out. The referee didn’t stop the fight until after some elbows on the ground. Campbell wins with a quick TKO. He’s getting a contract.

Fight 3 (Welterweight): Alvidrez (+220) vs Kubanza (-270)

Kubanza landed some big leg kicks early, and was primarily on the attack. Alvidrez started moving forward and landed some nice jabs. A Kubanza body kick hurt him but Alvidrez bounced back to stun Kubanza as well and force Kubanza to go to the clinch to regain his composure. Alvidrez knocked him down with a nice left hand and then followed up for the next minute with Herb Dean seemingly about to end the fight the whole time. Kubanza returned to his feet, immediately got stunned again and Herb Dean ended the fight in favor of Alvidrez.

Fight 4 (Bantamweight): Jourdain (-220) vs Dias (+185)

Jourdain knocked Dias down with the first leg kick and then got his head knocked back by the first punch. Jourdain landed a nice combo on Dias. Jourdain knocked him down with a lead elbow. Dias landed a takedown though with a submission threat on Jourdain. Dias landed a big elbow on the ground after Jourdain escaped. Jourdain eventually got top position and returned the fight to the feet. Jourdain likely won the round when he escaped from the ground. Jourdain 10-9.

Round two started with an absolute brawl before Dias went for a takedown. Jourdain knocked Dias down with another calf kick. Jourdain ended up on top on the ground though. Back on the feet, Jourdain was on the front foot but nothing major happened. Jourdain wins 10-9 again.

Jourdain got ground control early in the 3rd and got a choke quickly to win via submission. He should get a contract.

Fight 5 (Middleweight): Main Event – Costa (-120) vs Pinas (+110)

Costa was moving his hands constantly but got tagged early and hurt. Pinas hit him again with a big right hand and dropped him face down winning the fight via KO.

Power Ranking:

  1. Damian Pinas
  2. Kurtis Campbell
  3. Louis Jourdain
  4. Christopher Alvidrez
  5. Rashid Vagabov

Pinas, Campbell, and Alvidrez get contracts for sure with big KOs. Jourdain put on a fun fight before getting a round 3 finish so I think he gets a contract too. Vagabov looked talented but not interesting, and Dana didn’t seem to respect the trash talk during a boring fight, I think he does not receive a contract.

Contracts:

Dana talked about Vagabov being a 7/1 favorite and talking during the fight. He did not receive a contract.

Kurtis Campbell lived up to his 5/1 favorite status and gets a contract.

Christopher Alvidrez talked about how dangerous his opponent looked and he knocked him out, Alvidrez gets a contract.

Jourdain landed 30 calf kicks and then beat Dias at his own game and gets a contract.

Dana loved the Pinas fight and said he would’ve gotten a bonus if this was a UFC fight but he did get a contract.
