Round 2 of qualifying is in the books across all 3 levels. We had some extremely close matches, huge comebacks and big upsets that keep the next round as interesting as ever. 9 out of 14 champions league matches ended within 1 goal difference.

Round 2 Results
Champions Path
Match 1: Mjällby AIF (Sweden) def. Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar) 3-0 (3-0/0-0)
Mjällby AIF scored 3 first half goals in Sweden. 135 scoreless minutes later, the Swedish side prevailed, 3-0. They didn’t exactly blow out the Red Imps, but they sure took care of business.
Match 2: Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) def. Larne (Northern Ireland) 9-0 (4-0/5-0)
It took 25 minutes for Red Star Belgrade to score what would ultimately be the decisive goal. They netted 8 more for good measure and move onto Round 3 with the most dominant win of the round.
Match 3: Sabah (Azerbaijan) def. KuPS (Finland) 3-0 (1-0/2-0)
Sabah scored right before halftime and headed to Finland holding just a 1 goal lead. After a scoreless first half, Sabah scored some insurance goals, eventually winning 3-0.
Match 4: Kauno Žalgiris (Lithuania) def. KÍ (Faroe Islands) 1-0 (0-0/1-0)
This was a hard one for me to pick, and I ultimately picked wrong. No one scored in the Faroe Islands, and Kauno Žalgiris took advantage of playing at home. It took them 85 minutes to do so, 175 minutes total, but the Lithuanian side scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match.
Match 5: AGF (Denmark) def. Lech Poznań (Poland) 5-5 (1-4/4-1) a.e.t. (4-3 on Penalties)
In what I pegged as the highest quality match of the round, wow did these 2 teams deliver. In game 1, in Denmark, it was Lech Poznań that scored first, 29 minutes into the match. 8 minutes later, AGF would be down to 10 men. That’s when the floodgates opened. The Polish side scored again before halftime, and after allowing AGF to score shorthanded early in the second half, netted 2 more to leave Denmark up 4-1. There are not many situations better than heading into a home leg 2 with a 3 goal lead. Within 90 minutes in Poland though, it was all AGF. A 32′ goal, a 55′ penalty left AGF within striking distance. At the 75th minute, AGF equalized and sent the game into extra time with all the momentum, despite playing away from home. It was actually Lech Poznań who scored in extra time though, narrowly avoiding choking away their once dominant lead. That hope lasted for all of 5 minutes, when AGF re-tied the match for the final time. With all things even, the two sides headed to penalties. Lech Poznań again took the early lead, making their first penalty while AGF missed. Lech Poznań’s next 2 attempts would be saved though, with AGF converting to lead 2-1 after 3 rounds. Shooters were perfect for both sides the rest of the shootout, and AGF held on to advance.
What a match this was, I picked AGF to be the better team in a battle of titans, and I think they ultimately were, especially when they played 11 on 11.
Match 6: Ararat-Armenia (Armenia) def. Shamrock Rovers (Ireland) 3-2 (2-0/1-2)
Shamrock Rovers made a big comeback in Round 1, and they needed to again after allowing 2 second half goals in Armenia. It took just 36 minutes in Ireland for the Rovers to score 2 goals and even the aggregate. Unfortunately, the comeback was for naught as Ararat-Armenia netted the winner at the 73rd minute.
Match 7: Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) def. Universitatea Craiova (Romania) 3-2 (1-0/2-2)
In another close match, Levski Sofia took just 8 minutes to open scoring, but both teams failed to net any more in Bulgaria. Universitatea Craiova trailed by 1, but were headed to Romania for leg 2. Levski Sofia again started hot, scoring at 13′ and again just three minutes later at 16′. They looked to be running away with things, but Universitatea Craiova scored in stoppage time and headed into halftime with a little momentum, but still trailed by 2. 3 minutes into the second half they brought the lead down to just 1. It felt like they had another goal in them, but alas it did not come and Levski Sofia held on to advance.
Match 8: Kairat (Kazakhstan) def. Omonia (Cyprus) 1-1 (0-1/1-0) a.e.t. (6-5 on penalties)
Omonia scored just 13 minutes into the match on home soil, but a 34′ red card halted the scoring action. Omonia survived with 10 men to hold a 1-0 lead, but then had to travel for Leg 2 in Kazakhstan. Lightning would strike twice for Omonia, as they suffered another early red card, this time just 26 minutes into the match. 9 minutes later, Kairat had their equalizer. After that, Omonia held on with 10 men once again to send the match to extra time. In the 111th minute, another red card would send Omonia down to just 9 men. Kairat couldn’t capitalize on the short two man advantage, so the game headed to penalties. Omonia missed their second penalty and Kairat missed their 4th, but both teams made the all-important 5th penalty and sat at 4-4. After Kairat scored the 7th to take a 6-5 lead, Omonia had a chance to answer, but another missed penalty won the game for Kairat.
Losing 3 players over the course of 2 games is not a winning recipe for Omonia, but the Kairat magic seemingly lives on for another year.
Match 9: Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) def. Thun (Switzerland) 4-3 (1-1/3-2) a.e.t.
I may have missed my prediction on this one, but I did peg this match as the most likely to go to extra time. Thun scored in the 20th minute at home, but a late Dinamo Zagreb goal sent the match to Croatia tied. Despite being on the road, Thun scored twice early to take a 3-1 lead. A 67′ red card changed everything for Thun though. 7 minutes later, Zagreb scored, and 4 minutes after that, the match was tied. Thun held on to force extra time, but Dinamo found the winner at 112′ to punch their ticket to Round 3.
Match 10: Hapoel Be’er Sheva (Israel) def. Víkingur Reykjavík (Iceland) 3-2 (1-2/2-0)
My upset pick looked good at first as Víkingur scored the first goal shortly after a scoreless first half. The Israeli side answered a few moments later, but Víkingur Reykjavík scored again late to leave Iceland with a lead. Hapoel Be’er’s home game was actually played in Hungary, but they took advantage regardless evening the match in the 65th minute, and scoring the dagger in the 80th.
Match 11: Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) def. Iberia 1999 (Georgia) 3-1 (2-0/1-1)
Slovan Bratislava scored two early goals in Georgia and headed home up 2-0. They scored a 3rd right before halftime of their Home leg and looked dominate through 3 halves. Quickly in the 2nd half, Iberia 1999 scored to put some doubt into the minds of Slovan Bratislava, but that was all the scoring and Slovan Bratislava moved on with relative ease.
Match 12: Celje (Slovenia) def. Egnatia (Albania) 5-5 (3-3/2-2) a.e.t. (4-1 on penalties)
The darlings of round 1, Egnatia may not have got the job done, but they put on quite a show. Egnatia scored just 7 minutes in, but allowed a goal right before halftime to head into the break tied. Celje scored at 54′ and Egnatia answered right back 4 minutes later. Celje scored again, but so did Egnatia, sending the match to Slovenia at an exciting 3-3 scoreline. Egnatia scored via an own goal, but Celje once again tied the match at the 34th minute. Neither team scored again in regulation , heading into extra time at 4-4. Celje converted a penalty kick at the 97th minute, but a 114′ stunner by Egnatia sent the game to penalty kicks. Egnatia missed their 1st and 3rd penalties, and with Celje being perfect, the shootout ended when Celje scored their 4th, ending Egnatia’s run.
League Path
Match 1: Fenerbahçe (Turkiye) def. Górnik Zabrze (Poland) 2-1 (1-0/1-1)
Fenerbahçe scored the lone goal in Turkiye, but Górnik Zabrze had a chance to come back on home soil. A 12′ penalty put Fenerbahçe up by two, but a late stoppage time goal by Górnik Zabrze, sent them into the halftime locker room just searching for 1. Unfortunately for the Polish side, no more goals were scored and Fenerbahçe held on to advance.
Match 2: Sturm Graz (Austria) def. Heart of Midlothian (Scotland) 6-0 (4-0/2-0)
What a performance by Sturm Graz. They scored just 4 minutes into their home leg and never looked back. 50′, 53′, and 59′ goals send them to Scotland with a solid lead built. In Scotland 64th and 68th minute goals were just icing on the cake for Sturm Graz who ended with a 6-0 victory.
Round 3 Picks & Predictions
Champions Path
No new teams enter in Round 3 of the Champions path, so all of these teams will be coming off of victorious performances in round 2.
Match 1: Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) def. Kauno Žalgiris (Lithuania)
Kauno Žalgiris wasn’t very convincing, beating KÍ from the Faroe Islands by just 1 after barely sneaking by a Kosovo side in Round 1. Dinamo Zagreb pulled off a nice upset of Thun and I think they should be able to win this one pretty easily.
Match 2: Mjällby AIF (Sweden) def. Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia)
Both teams entered in Round 2 and faced low level competition, playing teams from Gibraltar and Georgia respectively. I like Mjällby AIF’s shutout win a little bit more so I’m taking them to win this one, but I could see this going either way.
Match 3: Kairat (Kazakhstan) def. Levski Sofia (Bulgaria)
I’ve got Kairat making a run again now after their magical upset of Omonia. It took 3 red cards to get them here, but I think Levski Sofia is an easier opponent. Maybe the magic runs out, but give me Kairat to make it back to the Champions League proper at this point.
Match 4: AGF (Denmark) def. Sabah (Azerbaijan)
Not the draw I wanted to see, as these are two of my favorite teams left in the tournament. I thought I’d be picking Sabah until the end, but AGF is my #1 ranked team here and I have to take them.
Match 5: Celje (Slovenia) def. Ararat-Armenia (Armenia)
I’m not too sure what to think about either of these teams. Either way, Celje had a nice win over the surging Egnatia so I’m going with them to continue that momentum.
Match 6: Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) def. Hapoel Be’er Sheva (Israel)
Red Star Belgrade didn’t have the hardest Round 2 opponent, but they did have the most dominant showing and remain one of my highest ranked teams in Round 3. Hapoel Be’er Sheva didn’t get upset like I had predicted, but they also didn’t win convincingly against Víkingur Reykjavík. I’m taking Red Star in another blowout.
League Path
Match 1: NEC (Netherlands) def. Olympiacos (Greece)
This might be considered an upset, but I’m just not very high on the Greek club teams at the moment and I think NEC has what it takes to win this one.
Match 2: Bodø/Glimt (Norway) def. Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgium)
A tough draw for both teams, but how do I not go with Bodø/Glimt to make another run. They were the story of last year’s champions league and I have to pick them as far as they can go.
Match 3: Sturm Graz (Austria) def. Fenerbahçe (Turkiye)
In an interesting draw, the 2 advancing teams from round 2 (the first round that included the League Path) drew each other. Fenerbahçe was my number 1 ranked team from that group, and maybe I should be picking them to win here. Sturm Graz won so dominantly in a match I picked them to lose, that I’ve raised them to a point where I now have them winning this game.
Match 4: Lyon (France) def. Sparta Prague (Czechia)
Lyon is my highest ranked team in the entire League Path. No shade to Sparta Prague, but I think Lyon wins pretty convincingly here.
Europa League
Round 2 Results
Match 1: Anderlecht (Belgium) def. Hammarby IF (Sweden) 4-2 (1-1/3-1)
Anderlecht scored just 6 minutes into the game, but action slowed down after that. A late Anderlecht red card led to a Hammarby equalizer and the match headed to Belgium tied. Hammarby scored 2 minutes into the away leg and enter halftime with a lead, but Anderlecht scored just 2 minutes into the 2nd half, and would score twice more to take the match 4-2.
Match 2: CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria) def. Qarabağ (Azerbaijan) 0-0 (0-0/0-0) a.e.t. (5-4 on Penalties)
Not much to speak of here, no goals or red cards in either leg, so the match headed to Penalties on Bulgarian soil. Qarabağ missed their 2nd penalty and CSKA Sofia hit them all to move on to the next round.
Match 3: Hradec Králové (Czechia) def. Tromsø (Norway) 4-1 (1-0/3-1)
Hradec Králové took control of the match when they scored the only goal of the Norwegian leg in the 85th minute. Tromsø equalized early in their away leg. But then Hradec Králové scored 3 unanswered to win the match.
Match 4: Ferencváros (Hungary) def. Twente (Netherlands) 4-3 (2-1/2-2)
Ferencváros scored first but Twente equalized. A late goal by the Hungarian side stole the Norwegian leg. Heading to Hungary, Ferencváros led 2-1. Ferencváros scored first to go up by 2, but a 36′ red card put everything into question. Ferencváros scored again tough to go up 3, which they needed as they conceded two late but held on to win 4-3.
Match 5: Beşiktaş (Turkiye) def. Midtjylland (Denmark) 3-0 (1-0/2-0)
An early Midtjylland red card set the stage for Beşiktaş to run away with leg 1, but they left Turkiye with just 1 goal. Luckily for them, they won the away leg too, netting two after another Midtjylland red card.
Match 6: Pafos (Cyprus) def. Hajduk Split (Croatia) 4-2 (0-2/4-0) a.e.t.
Hajduk Split came out of halftime in Croatia and scored 2 goals to take command of the match. In Cyprus though, Pafos scored one before halftime to move within striking distance. It took until stoppage time, but Pafos found their equalizer and sent the match into extra time. Just 3 minutes into extra time, Pafos took the lead, and with time dwindling and Hajduk Split going for broke, Pafos scored again to complete the comeback.
Match 7: Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) def. Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova) 6-0 (5-0/1-0)
Sheriff Tiraspol was likely the weakest team in Round 2, and they showed it. It took just 5 minutes for Maccabi Tel Aviv to take the lead, which they would never give up. They ended up netting 5 in Moldova, and headed to leg 2 on cruise control. They scored 1 in leg 2, off a Sheriff Tiraspol own goal, to win the match a commanding 6-0.
Match 8: Benfica (Portugal) def. St. Gallen (Switzerland) 6-2 (1-2/5-0)
St. Gallen came out hot in Switzerland, scoring first but quickly allowing the tying goal. The scored again at 80th minute and put some fear into Benfica heading into leg 2. Vangelis Pavlidis opened the scoring for Benfica and tied the match at 11′. He scored again in the 55th and a St. Gallen red card shortly after killed any chances the swiss side had. Pavlidis scored a hat trick, and added a 4th via a penalty shot for good measure, as Benfica scored 5 total to run away with a match that just 90 minutes ago felt like anyone’s game.
Match 9: PAOK (Greece) def. Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) 5-2 (3-2/2-0)
Dynamo Kyiv took the lead just 3 minutes into the match, but PAOK scored 3 in a row to take a big lead, but Dynamo Kyiv scored again late and carried just a 1 goal deficit into enemy territory. In Greece, Dynamo Kyiv couldn’t break through. PAOK scored insurance goals right before and right after the halftime break and ultimately cruised to victory down the stretch.
Round 3 Picks & Predictions
Champions Path
Match 1: Iberia 1999 (Georgia) def. Larne (Northern Ireland)
I had Larne ranked higher coming into Champions League, but beating the lowest ranked team, San Marino’s Tre Flori and losing the next match 9-0 is not a good resume for Larne. This is a close match on paper, but I’m not picking a team that just lost 9-0.
Match 2: Omonia (Cyprus) def. Lincoln Red Imps (Gibraltar)
Omonia disappointed with their 3 red card loss to Kairat, but I still rate them pretty highly. I love the Red Imps, but I just can’t pick them here, unfortunately.
Match 3: Universitatea Craiova (Romania) def. KuPS (Finland)
This is a close one for me, where I don’t have particularly strong convictions about either side. I’m sticking with my pre-tournament rankings and picking Universitatea Craiova.
Match 4: Egnatia (Albania) def. Shamrock Rovers (Ireland)
I have Shamrock Rovers ranked slightly higher, but Egnatia has been so electric in their games that I decided to go with them.
Match 5: Lech Poznań (Poland) def. KÍ (Faroe Islands)
Lech Poznań had a penalty kick loss to AGF, and look to be one of the best teams in this section of qualifying. I like KÍ but a win here seems pretty unlikely.
Match 6: Thun (Switzerland) def. Víkingur Reykjavík (Iceland)
Thun is a team I felt very confident in, but let me down in Champion’s League. Víkingur Reykjavík is a team I also feel high on. Ultimately, I stuck with Thun here, but whoever wins will be a team I’m keeping my eye on moving forward.
League Path
Match 1: Beşiktaş (Turkiye) def. Hradec Králové (Czechia)
Beşiktaş and Hradec Králov both pulled out nice wins in Round 2, but I’m going with Beşiktaş to win this one.
Match 2: Rangers (Scotland) def. Jagiellonia Białystok (Poland)
These are two new teams entering the competition in Round 3. Rangers has a higher past pedigree, but I really considered Jagiellonia Białystok. In the end though, I played it safe and went with Rangers, but I do think it will be a close one.
Match 3: PAOK (Greece) def. Anderlecht (Belgium)
PAOK and Anderlecht both has impressive round 2 performances. This was the hardest patch for me to predict of the round, but PAOK’s superior performance in last year’s Europa League is what pushed me over the edge.
Match 4: Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) def. Pafos (Cyprus)
Red Bull Salzburg is another new addition to the competition, entering in Round 3. I really considered Pafos in this one, but I wasn’t impressed with their performance in Round 2.
Match 5: Benfica (Portugal) def. Heart of Midlothian (Scotland)
Benfica made Round 2 interesting but a huge leg 2 led them through to Round 3. Heart of Midlothian falls down after being blown out in the Champions League. I probably would’ve taken Benfica against anyone in this group, especially against a team who just lost 6-0.
Match 6: Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) def. CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria)
Maccabi Tel Aviv won 6-0 in Round 2, Sheriff Tiraspol isn’t the hardest opponent, but 6-0 is 6-0. CSKA Sofia pulled off a big upset of Qarabağ, but they did so without scoring a goal, so I’m expecting them to get outclassed in this one.
Match 7: Ferencváros (Hungary) def. Górnik Zabrze (Poland)
Ferencváros over Twente was my upset pick from last round and I was glad to see Ferencváros pull it off, despite a red card. I wanted to go with them again, but Górnik Zabrze played Fenerbahçe very close in Champions League, so it was a toss up. I went with my heart though and I’m taking Ferencváros.
Conference League
Round 2 Results
We had a great set of matches in Round 2. I went 5-1 in the Champions Path, and 29-14 in the Main Path for a total record of 34-15, much better than my 16-10 record from Round 1.

Match 1: Borac Banja Luka (Bosnia & Herzegovina) def. Petrocub Hîncești (Moldova) 6-3 (3-0/3-3)
Match 2: ETO Győr (Hungary) def. Atert Bissen (Luxembourg) 7-3 (6-2/1-1)
Match 3: ML Vitebsk (Belarus) def. Sutjeska (Montenegro) 5-1 (3-0/2-1)
Match 4: Flora (Estonia) def. The New Saints (Wales) 1-1 (1-0/0-1) a.e.t. (4-2 in Penalties)

This one was too crazy not to talk about. Riga entered leg 2 up 3-2, but Vardar evened it up early. A Vardar red card set them up for failure, but at the 66th minute Vardar took the lead. Riga finally capitalized against a shorthanded Vardar and sent the match to extra time with a 87′ equalizer. The craziest part of the match though was what happened in extra time, as Riga netted 4 goals throughout extra time.
